In this introductory course, you will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of hydrologic modelling theory and practice

  • Be introduced to Raven, an open-source, flexible, and extensible hydrologic modelling framework designed for both research and operational applications

  • Understand how to set up, run, and interpret Raven models

  • Explore some of Raven’s advanced capabilities and how they differ from other modelling tools

You’ll also gain hands-on experience working with Raven model files, using RavenView to visualize results, and navigating input/output data.

This course serves as the foundation for all other Raven-based training and is ideal for those new to hydrologic modelling or Raven.

Tutorial: Raven Walkthrough #1
This section includes a series of videos that provide an overview of Tutorial 1. The tutorial walks through setting up and running a simple lumped Raven model for the Irondequoit Creek watershed. It covers the basics of preparing model input files, running Raven from the command line, interpreting output files, and making basic model modifications such as adjusting parameters and adding land use complexity. The tutorial also introduces users to generating custom outputs and visualizing results using RavenView.
