The Advanced Raven Course is back for 2024! This course is a two-day virtual course will start with a refresher on basics and move onto more advanced topics. The course will be instructed by:

  • Robert Chlumsky, MASc., P.Eng., President at Heron Hydrologic
  • Dr. James R Craig, PhD, P.Eng.
  • Dr. Bryan Tolson, PhD

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • understand Raven model inputs, and build a set of Raven input files from scratch;
  • quickly develop a model structure and parameter files using R and RavenR;
  • use BasinMaker to develop watershed delineations and model input files for Raven;
  • understand gridded data (e.g., from CaSPAr) and provide Raven with gridded inputs and forcings;
  • configure the latest reservoir tools in Raven;
  • use Ostrich to perform more advanced calibration, including calibrating to reservoir stage and applying custom diagnostics in calibration; and
  • use Magpie to facilitate more efficient development of Raven models.

Due to the advanced nature of this course, it is highly recommended that participants have at least an introductory knowledge of these topics. It is recommended that participants have taken one of either the Raven Training or the Principles of Hydrologic Modelling courses in order to make the most of the advanced course.

Schedule

The course will take place online via Zoom on February 22nd and February 23rd, 2024 from 9am to 4:30pm Eastern time. Recordings of each day will be made available to all registrants following the course delivery.

An optional drop-in session will also be offered during the prior week and February 21st to help ensure that participants are able to install the required programs for the course. Information on installation and required programs will be provided well in advance of the course to all participants. Participants are ultimately responsible for ensuring that they are able to install the necessary software to participate in the course. Note that we will make use of Google Colab in the course to alleviate many issues with software installations, but can support individuals with installing software locally as part of course support.
